Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) · Design & technology

Structures

Pupils learn the principles of structures, studying stability, strength, load-bearing, compression, tension, trusses and stress distribution in beams and frames; they explore how materials, shapes and formwork contribute to stiffness and stability and apply simple calculations and modelling to predict behaviour. Practical projects develop analysis and problem-solving when designing structures for function and economy.
